Detail

Apollo 17 was the ninth crewed U.S. mission to the Moon and the sixth to land astronauts on the lunar surface. This document is an excerpt from the Apollo 17 Technical Crew Debriefing, dated January 4, 1973, in which Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt reported seeing light flashes.

Schmitt stated that the flashes occurred almost continuously throughout the flight whenever he was dark-adapted, including one he thought was a flash on the lunar surface. He noted that during the period when the crew wore blindfolds for the Apollo Light Flash Moving Emulsion Detector (ALFMED) experiment there were no visible flashes, but that he began seeing them again that night before sleeping.
